Gerardo L. Munck’s constructive assessment of the methods used to measure democracies promises to bring order to the debate in academia and in practice. Satisfaction with democracy (SWD) is one of the most frequently used indicators in public opinion research on political support.

In spite of this, many critics have highlighted its weakness as a single measure of support for democratic performance. This chapter reviews the main criticisms against the use of SWD and provides an empirical assessment of the validity of SWD as a measure.

The former relate democracy to particular institutional structures, whereas the latter define democracy according to underlying principles. Another distinction relates to whether democracy is a dichotomous or continuous concept.
